Plot

The film tells the story of Raja (Aamir Khan), a poor taxi driver who lives in a small town called Palankhet. He falls in love with Aarti (Karisma Kapoor), a rich girl who comes to Palankhet for a vacation with her father Mr. Sehgal (Suresh Oberoi), her stepmother Shalini (Archana Puran Singh) and her cousin Swarup (Mohnish Bahl). Aarti also loves Raja, but faces opposition from her family, who want her to marry Swarup. Aarti decides to elope with Raja and marry him against her family's wishes.

After their marriage, Raja and Aarti move to Mumbai, where they face many challenges and hardships. Raja struggles to adjust to the city life and feels insecure about his status and education. Aarti tries to support him and make him happy, but also faces pressure from her family, who try to separate them. Shalini hires a woman named Janki (Navneet Nishan) to seduce Raja and create a rift between him and Aarti. Janki succeeds in making Raja drunk and takes him to a hotel room, where she takes some compromising photos of him. She then shows these photos to Aarti, who is heartbroken and leaves Raja.

Aarti returns to her father's house, where she discovers that she is pregnant with Raja's child. She decides to keep the child and raise him alone. Meanwhile, Raja is devastated by Aarti's departure and becomes depressed. He tries to find her, but fails. He also learns that Janki was hired by Shalini to trap him and expose his affair to Aarti. He confronts Janki and beats her up, but she escapes.

Four years later, Raja and Aarti meet again at a court, where they have to sign the divorce papers. They see each other's child for the first time and realize that they still love each other. However, they are unable to express their feelings due to their pride and ego. They sign the papers and part ways.

Later, Raja's friend Lallu (Johnny Lever) tells him that Aarti's family is planning to take her child away from her and send him to a boarding school. Raja decides to stop them and goes to Palankhet with Lallu. There, he meets Aarti's father, who tells him that he regrets his mistake of opposing their marriage and asks for his forgiveness. He also tells him that he has accepted Raja as his son-in-law and wants him to reunite with Aarti.

Raja then goes to Aarti's house, where he finds her locked in a room by Shalini and Swarup, who are trying to take her child away from her. He fights with them and rescues Aarti and her child. He then confesses his love for Aarti and asks her to come back with him. Aarti also confesses her love for Raja and agrees to go with him.

The film ends with Raja and Aarti leaving Palankhet with their child, while their families bless them.
